Cost Of Last-Minute Presents Totals £1.5billion

Were you organised this Christmas, or are you dashing out in the days leading up to December 25th to buy some last-minute gifts.

If it was the latter, then you’re contributing to the nation spending more than £1.5 billion on final arrangements this year, according to findings from American Express.

The main reason why people dash out to the shops in the week leading to Christmas is because they have remembered presents that happened to slip their minds (25 per cent). This is followed by people panic buying food and drink for Christmas Day, which is the case for a fifth of shoppers.

Stacey Sterbenz, vice president at American Express, said: “With gifts to organise, hosting or attending to parties and having the Christmas dinner to prepare, the festive season can be incredibly hectic, so it’s not surprising that an item or two might fall off the shopping list.”

Women are found to be the worst culprits, with a quarter of female shoppers guilty of looking for last-minute supplies compared with just 15 per cent of men.

With each shopper spending £66 on festivities during the final few days, this added up to more than £1.5 billion across the UK.

Having said that, it is better to overspend on a last-minute item than buy something that your loved one will hate. Money revealed around £355 million was spent on unwanted gifts this Christmas, which is a huge waste of money per household.
